I was certainly disappointed to see the letter from Mr Max Menzies published in the Wellington Times on Wednesday 2nd May 2017. His letter was an attack at the heart of our beautiful community and left me feeling frustrated that people like Mr Menzies are too quick to judge Wellington at face value, and not stop and spend quality time in our community.

To be honest Wellington could do with a face-lift. We would benefit from the addition of more business in our town, which is happening, but to compare Wellington to poor areas of South Africa is a huge exaggeration and one made by someone who is only looking at the appearance of a place and not the spirit of a town.
Unfortunately Mr Menzies obviously isn’t aware of all the projects and programs that are being done to boost tourism, economic development and fight crime in our community.
When you take the time to look around Wellington, you will see things happening in our town and in our surrounding villages. Some of these projects include the Wellington main street upgrade; upgrades at the Caves Caravan Park; and the improvement of the lights at Rygate Park, improving the facilities for local sporting groups. There are numerous projects occurring in the villages, such as the Moxton Park upgrade at Stuart Town, and the installation of multi-purpose courts at Geurie. The Gungie program is a wonderful example of the community spirit that runs through our town, when local organisations joined forces to combat crime and drug related issues, while also promoting community spirit through games of rugby league. The expansion of correctional facilities, with the construction of the Macquarie Correctional Centre, is a major state government project that is bringing people to our town, purchasing properties and opening businesses. Exciting times lie ahead additional projects on the horizon.
There are a lot of good people in Wellington who are working hard to make it a better place, and it is only a matter of time before Wellington starts taking some big leaps forward. We may never fill all the shops in the main street, but that doesn’t mean our town is dying. The world is a different place today, with the addition of technology, and the Wellington we know and love today is not the same Wellington that was here in the 1960s, and nor should we want it to be.
I’m not saying Wellington is perfect, but it is the place we call home and when you have someone writing degrading letters about our wonderful town, it is very disappointing and frustrating. Let’s prove to Mr Menzies that we have a beautiful town and work together to show people that Wellington is a great place to live, work and raise a family.
On an end note, I found it quite amusing that Mr Menzies had difficulty finding an ex-councillor’s email. I did a quick Google search for “Wellington Council Councillors” and the first search item that popped up had a list of our most recent councillors (pre-amalgamation). – David Grant.
