On a wet day away from home, Conn’s side managed to break down their opposition’s defenses through continuous pressure.
He was pleased with the weekend's win.
“Overall I’m happy. It’s always good to come away with a win, especially away from home,” he said.
“Coming off of a break is never easy, especially with only one game under our belt, but I was really happy with how the guys structured up.”
The Redbacks were on top all day, but only managed to get their first points on the board after a hard-hitting opening 10 minutes.
“We definitely didn’t come out all-guns-blazing, but our pressure was fantastic from the get-go,” Conn said.
“We were able to complete multiple sets and maintain possession for a lot longer than our guys were probably used to, so that’s a full credit to them.”
Conn said the sides biggest downfall against Narromine a fortnight beforehand was their structuring.
“This week it was good to see all the guys gel together a bit better.”
Conn said his boys came up against a Kookaburra’s outfit who tried to tempt the Redbacks into an unnecessarily-physical game, but his side resisted the urge to bite back.
“I was pleased that they guys didn’t retaliate to some of the niggle that was going on from our opposition.
“Given that we’ve got a pretty young team, I’m happy it didn’t escalate and become something it didn’t need to be.
“The guys stayed really level-headed and I’m proud – it could have easily blown up,” Conn said.
Conn said some individuals stood out in the win.
“Tommy Swainston got the three votes – he was really good all day.
“Brad Kitch and Morgan Kalsau rounded out our best three.
“These are all young guys who really stood up and pressured all day.”
Conn said his side is taking steps in the right direction.
“We’re definitely heading we’re I want to go. We showed this by playing solid, wet-weather footy and sticking to our structures all day.”
The Redbacks have a bye this weekend, before fronting up for three home matches in a row.
“It’ll be good to play on our home deck.”
