Wellington trainer Garry McCarney’s appeal against the severity of a penalty handed down after a pair of his runners returned a positive swab has been dismissed.

McCarney pleaded guilty to two charges of presenting horses to race with the drug in their system, dating back to a meeting at Narromine on November 12 of last year.
Both Southern Flight and Head To Toe were victorious in winning on the day, with pre and post-race swabs taken from the former returning vastly elevated levels of cobalt.
Head To Toe’s readings didn’t register as high, but were still above the allowed threshold of 100 micrograms per litre (ug/l).
McCarney appealed the 15-month disqualification, however Racing NSW announced on Friday that the penalty would remain.
As such, McCarney’s disqualification will commence from April 28 and he will not be able to re-apply for his trainer’s licence until July 28, 2018.
