Garry Hayes from the Men’s Shed said the Shed has supplied the trophies for at least the five years and commended master-craftsman Neil Blake’s efforts.
“Neil’s the man who actually makes them all, and they always turn out fantastic,” he said.
Mr Blake said it’s a great feeling to know that the trophies – that he makes with his own hands – are appreciated.
“It feels good to be able to make these trophies, I’ve always enjoyed this kind of work.
“… but it does always feel good to finish off the last one off,” he said.
A trophy is awarded to every winner on the Sunday of the Boot Carnival, and Mr Blake said he does his best too make sure each years set is different different to the last.
“About 50 hours of work goes into making them all and I always try to do something a little different.”
Mr Hayes said Mr Neil spent his Christmas period creating the trophies for this year.
“It just shows goes to show the commitment these guys have to our community.
“The Men’s Shed have made something for just about every not-for-profit organisation in Wellington,” he said.
Mr Hayes said the Shed had to make seven extra trophies last year.
“All of the trainers for one of the winners last year wanted a trophy – so they had to place their order and we got them all made.”
We’re all retired men. Doing this work helps to keep our brains working, it keeps us physically active and keeps us all stimulated.
- Garry Hayes.
Mr Hayes said the work the Men’s Shed does doesn’t just benefit the community, but also helps the men involved.
“We’re all retired men. Doing this work helps to keep our brains working, it keeps us physically active and keeps us all stimulated.
“It all leads to healthier guys and I think that’s the main goal of the Men’s Sheds all around the country,” Mr Hayes said.
Mr Hayes said the Shed is now doing work for the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
“We’re currently creating display boards for all of the ribbons in Sydney, so that’s keeping us busy,” he said.
