Nominations are open until 5.00pm Wednesday 22 February 2017 for the award which acknowledges the achievements and contributions of residents aged 55 years and over as part of NSW Seniors Week.
Many of us in the community rely on the tireless work of these people and this award is about acknowledging and respecting the wonderful contribution Dubbo’s older generation consistently makes.
Whether that is through volunteering, education, donations, and charity services – however they have chosen to get involved in the community. I am positive all our lives have been improved in some way by the work of our senior citizens.
The winner of the 2017 Dubbo Senior Citizen of the Year Award will be determined by a committee comprised of previous winners and community members and I will be presenting the award to the winner on Wednesday 8 March 2017 at the Dubbo RSL during the Seniors Expo. Nomination forms are available from Dubbo Regional Council’s Dubbo Civic Administration Building on the corner of Church and Darling streets, Western Plains Cultural Centre, Macquarie Regional Library Dubbo branch, Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre or online at www.dubbo.nsw.gov.au.
Waste to Art
I am constantly blown away by the artistic talent that people show when they take part in Waste to Art and I know this year will be no different for this year’s competition.
Now in its 14th year Waste to Art showcases the creative re-use of discarded materials and the ingenuity that goes into creating these works of art is always astonishing.
Entries are now open and students, community groups and professional artists are all invited to enter artworks which reinforce the message: Reduce - Reuse – Recycle.
Individuals or groups living in the Dubbo Regional Council LGA can enter 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and functional objects in the following categories: Primary School; Secondary School; Community; and Open. Cash prizes and the chance to progress to the regional exhibition are available to winners in each category. Enter online by going to the web site of the Western Plains Cultural Centre. Entries close Monday 20 March. The official opening of Waste to Art is Saturday 8 April at 2 pm at the WPCC.
Dubbo attracts major events
Dubbo will host a major sporting events this weekend with the Little Athletics NSW Region Three Championships on at Barden Park. Barden Park is one of the premier sporting facilities in Dubbo and a lot of work has gone into providing these to the community and attracting top quality events. This event also provides a great boost for the local economy with the influx of visitors with athletes and their families travelling to the region for the event. Due to the hot weather that we have been having this week the Little Athletics Championships will start an hour earlier at 7.30am instead of 8.30am..
