Wellington Amateur Swimming Club president Jo Clarke said the meet offers opportunity for local children.
“Usually the kids would have to travel Sydney-way to attend a meeting of this caliber,” Mrs Clarke said.
“Hopefully the meet can attract visitors to the region who may stay for few days.”
Three Country Regional Meets will be run simultaneously at Wellington, Charlestown and Wollongong over the same weekend.
This year, the meets will also serve as a chance to qualify for the 2017 NSW Country Championships.
Swimming NSW Chief Executive Officer Mr Mark Heathcote explained how this joint venture between Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) and Swimming NSW will provide swimmers and their coaches with the opportunity to compete at their own Country Regional Meet:
“The involvement of Dubbo Regional Council in supporting Wellington Swimming Club greatly strengthened the Club’s bid and now the people and swimmers of Wellington have been rewarded with the hosting rights to one of these exciting meets,” he said.
Mr Heathcote said Wellington will see hundreds of athletes and their families making the trip to town, which will not only provide local swimmers with stronger competition for their ongoing development, but also present an excellent tourism opportunity for visitors to explore all Wellington and district has to offer.
“The involvement of the Council in conjunction with Swimming Club puts the meet in great stead to be one of the most successful Country Regional Meets of the year,” Mr Heathcote said.
DRC administrator Michael Kneipp said council is excited that the Wellington Aquatic Centre will be one of the venues for the statewide event.
“We look forward to welcoming competitors and their families to Wellington and relish the opportunity to showcase all the region has to offer to visitors,” Mr Kneipp said.
“Many family and friends will be visiting and staying in the region for the swimming meet and key attractions will certainly benefit from the increase in visitation.”
DRC economic development officer Jacki Parish said an influx of local, day trippers and overnight visitors is expected.
Swimming meets will be held in Charlestown and Wollongong over the same weekend.
The Wellington Pool will be closed to the public for two days, resuming normal hours on Monday January 30.
The Geurie Pool will still be open during its regular hours during this time.
