Despite the rain I had a great morning at Wellington last Friday when we unveiled the rhino statue that will take pride of place in Cameron Park as well as launching the new Wellington Guide for tourists and new residents.

The rhino looks absolutely fantastic and features a wonderful design by St Mary’s School student Marissa Stanley and painted with the assistance of artist Jack Randall.
The statue is part of the larger Rhino Adventure which is comprised of rhino sculptures in Bathurst, Orange, Parkes, Cowra and Dubbo and provides a point of interest within the region while continuing the rhino conservation story of the Taronga Wild! Rhino Trail.
The aim is to encourage people travelling through the region to stop and have a look at the wonderful things that Wellington has to offer visitors. Putting the rhino out the front of the Visitors Information Centre will help to lure people inside where the friendly staff can tell them all about this great town.
To help the VIC staff do this Council has put together a guide for visitors and residents featuring all the things to see and do and places to stay, shop and eat in Wellington. I want everyone to know that Wellington is a great destination in and of itself and that there is so much to enjoy in the great town.
Stronger Communities Fund – Major Projects
Dubbo Regional Council has endorsed the allocation of $9 million to 10 major projects to kick start new developments in Dubbo, Wellington and surrounding villages. This money has come from the $10 million Stronger Communities Fund granted to merging Councils.
The funding allocations were decided by an assessment panel made up of the Member for Dubbo the Hon Troy Grant MP, Council Administrator Michael Kneipp, Department of Premier and Cabinet, Director Greater Western NSW, Alison Morgan and overseen by Michael McKenna from Luka Group Accounting as a probity adviser after extensive community consultation.
The major projects selected by the Assessment Panel will deliver long-term social and economic returns to the community. Projects such as the Wellington Caves Visitor Experience Centre has great potential to add to the visitor economy.
A 15 per cent increase in annual visitor numbers at the Wellington Caves has the potential to generate 5 additional jobs and contribute some $855,000 to the local economy through salaries and visitor expenditure.
Safari at the zoo
I was at the launch of an exciting new attraction at Taronga Western Plains Zoo recently.
The zoo has introduced the Savannah Safari where visitors can climb aboard the Savannah Safari truck and experience a unique guided tour amongst African animals. Just like a safari. Don’t forget that residents of the Dubbo Regional Council LGA are entitled to mates rates, so why not visit the zoo.
Merry Christmas and happy new year
I would like to wish everyone in the Dubbo Regional Council LGA a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. If you are travelling over the break please take care on the roads and ensure you all arrive safely.
If you are staying in the area and have friends or relatives visiting why not take some time to enjoy all the area has to offer. From the Wellington Caves, to the zoo to the Old Dubbo Gaol there is plenty to see and do and don’t forget that these places have mates rates for anyone who lives in the LGA.
You can also celebrate New Year with a bang at the fireworks party held at Caltex Park. It is a family-friendly, glass and alcohol free event. The fun starts at 5pm with the fireworks scheduled for 9pm.
