The week in Wellington sport

Last Wednesday there was no bowls unfortunately due to the rain. As always of course, if the game is unable to be played on the Wednesday it will be on the next day, Thursday, weather permitting and hopefully if there are no other commitments. Hopefully we will get a game in this week, however we think of those close by who are a little worse off than us at this time due to the rain.

On Sunday the Club Challenge got under way with the first round played at Dubbo Railway Bowling Club. This comprised of a singles game, triples and pairs. 

Singles: a high-quality game unfortunately the score did not reflect this with Trevor Messenger going down 25 -10  in the pairs Roger Wall & skip Rob Harvey also had a ding-dong fight on their hands on the last end with Railway sitting on the Jack with the score 19-all. Harv put down his bowl picked up the jack to take out the game with a one-shot win. 

Triples: Allan Manning, Jason Cornish and Bill Meharg also had a tight one but took out the game, also on the last end, with an 18-16 win. This gave Wellington their first win 2-1 to progress in the Club Challenge. Well done to both winning teams, keep up the good work. 

This weekend there will be no Club Challenge because of the long weekend.     

One lucky winner took out the Friday night members draw but i understand it’s at a healthy number again this week. Don't forget the music is on both Friday night and Saturday with the kitchen on for light meals.

Results of the triples final played last Sunday. Winners: Dot Heath, Rose Davis and Myrtle Lee. Runners-up: Carolyn Temessl, Regina Last and Tracey Reid.

Fours championships will start on Saturday October 8 at 1pm.

Teams are as follows: Carolyn Temessl, Regina Last, Tracey Reid and Rene Hannelly versus Deralle Maxfield, Robyn Baxter, Leanne Eerwin and Sue Manning.

The Wellington Hotel Winter Darts Challenge has seen the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club Sharks take out the Minor Premiership with a comfortable margin and they will be the team to beat now for the Shield.

Scott Reid had a short reign with the belt, 1 week and now Alf Wilson holds it after a 2 legs to 1 victory.

The Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club S.S Soldiers were guaranteed 3rd position were taking on the Wellington Bowling Club Odd Ones Out who needed a win which would guarantee their position in the top 4 otherwise they would need the Funder Cats to lose.

The Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club S.S Soldiers didn’t give the Wellington Bowling Club Odd Ones Out any chance by beating them by 7 games to nil.

Doubles results; Richard Kent-Philippe Bell defeated Cindy Croker-Trevor Messenger 2-1 and Alfred Button-Teena Hill defeated Rod Froude-Ken Fairley 2-1.

Singles results; Vicki Button defeated Trevor Messenger 2-0, Richard Kent defeated Rod Froude 2-0, Philippe Bell defeated Cindy Croker 2-0 and Alfred Button defeated Ken Fairley 2-0.

The Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club Sharks knowing that they had already won the Minor Premiership were out to fine tune the team going into the semis and in their way were the Federal Hotel Funder Cats who wanted a win, which may have gotten them into the Shield semis, but it wasn’t to be with the Sharks taking out the match by 6 games to 1.

Singles results; Allan Brown defeated Dave Stace 2-0, Jason Robbins defeated Peter Baker 2-0, Stellen Hudson lost to Tracey Reid 0-2 and Alf Wilson defeated Scott Reid 2-1.

The Wellington Hotel Oldzheimers who again only had 3 players were taking on the Wellington Bowling Club who always have only 3 players and with forfeits it saw the Wellington Hotel Oldzheimers take the match by 4 games to 2 and give them a bit of confidence going into the Cup semi-finals. Doubles results; Parish Petrovic-Terry Leonard defeated Jack Charlton 2-0 and David Wilson lost to Jason Cornish-Bill Meharg 1-2. Singles results; Parish Petrovic defeated Jack Charlton 2-0, Terry Leonard lost to Bill Meharg 1-2 and David Wilson defeated Jason Cornish 2-0.

The Wellington Hotel DV8s defeated the Wellington Hotel Cougars on a forfeit giving them a 7 games to nil win. Cup draw sees Federal Hotel Funder Cats take on the Wellington Hotel Oldzheimers and the Wellington Hotel Cougars take on the Wellington Bowling Club.  

The Wellington Hotel Dart Championship dates are as follows; October 9 will see the playing of both the Men`s and Ladies Singles.

Coming Darts events: November 26 at Mudgee.

The presentation day has been set down for the 11th of December starting at 12pm and all dart players are invited to come along and cheer the winners or even boo them, it`s your choice.

By 19th Hole

Wellington Golf Club saw 33 golfers hit the golf course last Saturday under threating skies and a modified course. All of the Wellington Golf Clubs Championships have been deferred due to the flooding of the course.

The semi-finals in the Kiss Trophy still sees Neil Hollow waiting for the other semi-final match to be played with Rodney Cunynghame to take on Garth Watts and this match will be played at a later date.

Semi-finals of the Cornish Trophy sees Tim Parker-Rod Pedron taking on Garth Watts-Kevin Reid, Liam Brien-Rod McMahon taking on Rod Irwin-Barry Jeffery with a date to be set for these matches.

Last Saturday’s event was a Stroke with Rodney Cunynghame the kind sponsor of the day.

This Saturday’s events are the October Monthly Medal in A and B-grades kindly sponsored by the Wellington Soldiers memorial Club plus the John Gersbach Putting competition as well as the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Clun Pointscore.

Coming events for October are; 8th event to be confirmed, 15th event to be confirmed, 22nd 4BBB Stableford, 29th event to be confirmed.

Last Saturday’s Stroke event was won by David Gillard who put together an excellent round of golf to finish with an unbelievable score of 54nett.

Runner-up also with a great round of golf was Gary McNaughton who finished with a 62nett.

Gersbach’s Mechanical nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 4th hole was won by Ron Cowan.

McDonald’s biggest whack in A-grade went to Kurt Cusack with a whack of 283mts and in B-grade it went to Fletcher Ivey with a whack of 248 mts.

Brent`s NFI award winner from last Saturday was David East who finished with a disgraceful 83nett. He was in a group where 3 of the 4 players had 90 off the sticks and 1 player had 88 off the stick, go the C-graders.
