Jockey Daniel Pitomac placed the three year old in a good position entering the straight and had the galloper on target for a prizemoney finish.
But Rock on Zariz with Winona Costin stormed up on the outside to win by a length with Charge of Light and Star of Shaft filling the placings.
Cheeky was well backed into $11 at one stage but began the 1200m journey at $13. He shot away from the stalls and stayed with the front runners all the way.
Connections of Cheeky were pleased with the debut at Randwick and the ride of Wellington hoop Pitomac.
