About 5.15am Thursday police and emergency services were called to Dooral Street following reports of an altercation between two men.
Police will allege a 43-year-old man and a 72-year-old man became involved in a fight outside a house.
During the altercation, the older man was allegedly held down by the younger man before a witness was able to subdue the younger man.
The older man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics but died on-route to Brewarrina Hospital.
Police from Darling River Local Area Command established a crime scene and arrested the 43-year-old man.
He was taken to Brewarrina Police Station and charged with assault causing death.
The man was refused bail to appear before Bourke Local Court tomorrow (Friday 24 June 2016).
