The Juniors were down 4-0 early against Dubbo Macquarie but all of a sudden this talent group clicked. Brian Baxter was over on the left and Kotoni Staggs stepped, swerved and cut through defenders to race over and then broke away to send Will lousick rushing over. Staggs was in it again after leaping high to take a Lousick kick.
Lousick scored after the break off a wonderfully placed Brad McCarroll kick and Brandon Shean stormed over. Staggs grabbed his 3rd and so did Lousick in a tear away 52-14 victory.
In the first grade match Dubbo Macquarie winger Ashley Withers has created a club record racing in for six tries in a 54-14 thumping of the Wellington Cowboys in their Group 11 rugby league match at Calex Park.
The dashing winger scored three tries in the first half and coasted in for a trio in the second.
‘’I wasn’t expecting to score three more in the second half. I didn’t know it a was club record.’’ he said.
Withers said after a slow start his side began to put it together
‘’We were down a bit early and just couldn’t get it happening but we talked about getting up and we did in the end. The match was marred by some spiteful incidents the referee forced to sin bin 4 players at various times.
The Cowboys had plenty of football early and banked their possession well when hooker Trent Forrest surged over from dummy half.
Its been a long season for Wellington and this performance was better and for 22 minutes they held Macquarie but Withers used a vulnerable hole on the left side defence to score and it was all level.
A long delay caused by a bad elbow injury to Wellington’s Daniel Ahsee held up the match for half an hour and then all of a sudden the pain got even greater for the Cowboys.
Dazzling winger Ashley Withers was in two more times before the half time whistle on the back of a sweeping move on the left again and just before time was easily into open space to give Dubbo Macquarie a 16-8 buffer at the break.
A terrible blunder from Wellington’s full back from a high ball gave Macquarie instant success a minute into the second half and a series of sin bins hit both teams hard.
Viliame Turava made the most of the open ground and sizzled into a gap to score.
Withers was in for his fourth off a break up the middle and an all in brawl certainly didn’t help but this was now one way traffic. The scoreline expanded Withers opening up the Cowboys for his fifth and sixth tries creating a club record as the Raiders punched out to a 54-14 lead and in the end they scored 38 points in the second half to secure an easy but at times tough victory..
The Reserve grade were humbled 68-12 but the Cowgirls were impressive winning by 18 -nil.
