But at Narromine in the Class 1 Narromine Newsagency Handicap (1100m) the Wellington galloper stormed home down the outside to win by more than a length.
"Cheeky had been troubled by a few injuries and was out of sorts but now he's right and flying," Maxwell said.
"He has won two in a row now and we're looking at Wellington for his next start or in the longer-term, a shot at the city or a provincial meeting."
Cheeky and jockey Daniel Pitomac have been a comeback story. Both with a hapless run of injuries, bad luck but now on their way.
"We are so pleased it was a local hoop. Daniel has struggled with a series of bad luck events but now his confidence is there and the pair work so well together," Maxwell said.
"We are very happy for Daniel, he deserves the luck too.
Cheeky loaded into the stable truck which also bears his name.
The Cheeky horse transport business might also get a kick along now as well part-owner Craig Maxwell said.
