Wellington were thrashed by Dubbo CYMS in first grade 58-0, 54-nil in reserve grade, the Under 18’s remain undefeated with a strong 34-24 win while the women’s side fell 34-14.
Coaching staff say the Cowboys are in a rebuilding phase and without captain coach Lewis Stanley Wellington were led by its veteran Ben McGregor who powered up the ground showing great courage.
CYMS made the early running and were over the white line after 3 minutes bumping easily off defenders. Jarryn Power pushed the buffer to 10 nil and then another 4 pointer which again met with little resistance had the Cowboys back pedalling.
Little football and tiredness began to leave gaps and on the edges Wellington became vulnerable diminutive back Colby Pellow used his pace to dash brilliantly to the left to score and John Gray easily glided home.
A bad mistake with the bouncing ball gave Jarryn Power fortune and Pellow crossed followed shortly after, Alex Bonham was getting comfortable positions to convert the try avalanche and at half time it was hapless and lopsided 42 nil.
After the break, Luke Jenkins barged his way over after 5 minutes of the second half, his try on the left edge a warning the score could be very embarrassing but full credit to Wellington who stuck in there.
They were better in the second half giving up tries to Kieran Cubby Ship and Alex Bonham both easy but the performance was better and while the season looks forlorn Wellington fought hard to the end.
Brian Baxter had a big match in the Under 18’s he scored the opening try and defended well in another sign the juniors are close to favourites now for the title in 2016, the brightest spot for a Cowboys season which has been disappointing so far.
