It is with a heavy heart that I heard the announcement of the death of Wellington Council, this death has been caused by the receiving of a 1,000 cuts from both State Government, and Federal Government. The final blow being the Forced Amalgamation process initiated by the State Government, which was supported or ignored by the current member for Dubbo, Mr Troy Grant. The sad demise of Wellington Council, will be a heavy burden to the people of Wellington and surrounding areas, Wellington, although once a proud part of the Central West area has been declared “Unfit” by a government body set up for the sole purpose of initiating it’s demise and the demise of many other worthy Councils.
The mourning for Wellington should last until after the July 2, election, for although the Federal Government has not taken any part in the death of Wellington LGA, it has contributed greatly to it’s end by it’s total lack of support for the voters of the area and of Regional NSW. This lack of support should be mirrored by the voters of Regional NSW in the federal election which is to take place on July 2. The voters should also be aware that there is a State Government election due next year and their memories of this sad day should be rekindled on that day.
The death was rather sudden, in the end, for the elected representatives of the Wellington LGA, they were informed of the passing by email and were told that their service was no longer necessary and that they were no longer required, although these elected councillors were in fact elected by the voters of Wellington LGA, this democratic process however did nothing to save them from the indiscriminate axe of the Baird Government.
All Councils that were spared in this process should take heed to the way Wellington LGA and others meet their untimely end, lest they will finish up the same way.
Barry Jeffery,
Long time resident of
the Deceased Wellington LGA.
