Established with the Australian Superfine Wool Growers Association (ASWGA) in 1963, the Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Awards recognise superior fleeces that are judged according to a severe series of criteria like fineness, style, strength and evenness.
Ed and Jill Hundy of Windradeen took first place in the 2016 edition of the Extrafine Wool Trophy with son Andrew and his wife Penny taking third place.
Andrew said the competition gives incentive and encouragement at a time when wool prices are down.
“We are very happy with the result,” Andrew said.
The family has placed in the awards since the 1980s.
“Dad is always striving to win it, it's his hobby to select the right fleece.”
Chairman of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group, Paolo Zegna presented Andrew, Penny, Ed and Jill with their respective awards at a gala dinner at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, on April 4.
“We’ve been celebrating the best quality wool since 1963 and it is always a pleasure to award the efforts and achievements of the woolgrowers,” Mr Zegna said.
“Our congratulations go to the winners and to each of the entrants. Supporting, understanding and promoting the commitment, skills and processes of growing superfine merino is a must for us: we would like all our Zegna consumers to be aware and to highly appreciate that.”
All fleeces entered in the competition are purchased by the Zegna Group.
A further severe selection of the best of them is transformed into the top line fabrics of the Ermenegildo Zegna collections.
