Established six years ago by the National Rural Health Alliance and sponsored by the Nationals Senator John Williams, the scholarship provides $4800 to a commencing dentistry student to assist in their first year studies.
One of the recipients this year is Leazelle Graham who was educated in Wellington.
At the completion of her studies Leazelle plans to practice dentistry in a country area in the hope of one day alleviating the dentist shortage and provide world-class health care to a regional area.
Senator Williams is also providing $2500 to Melissa Stevens who was educated in Dubbo.
Melissa hopes to one day work with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Indigenous families in remote communities.
Senator Williams said he was pleased to be able to support two students this year.
"As well as my normal $4800 I am able to pass on the $2500 which I won in a competition on the condition it was donated or given as sponsorship," he said.
"I am pleased to announce that Tamworth dental practitioner Richard Wise has agreed to mentor the students, and I thank now-retired Armidale dentist Chris Cole for his dedication with the first six students dating back to 2010.
Together with the National Rural Health Alliance we wish Leazelle and Melissa a successful first year."
