It will now be taken up again with education minister Adrian Piccoli.
"There were 1000 signatures on the submission which was a good show of support for a small regional community," Mr Grant told the ABC.
"That's something the community is obviously concerned about and rightfully concerned about."
Some of the concerns raised in the petition were needles being found on school grounds, vandalism and a man with a knife forcing the school into lockdown last year.
The petition has since been circulated around Wellington businesses for locals to sign.
"[It] draws to attention significant safety issues within our school," a spokesperson said at the time.
"These include members of the public entering school ground to use toilet facilities, vandalising play equipment, smashing windows as well as the use of graffiti.
"More recently the school going into lockdown during a school social due to a man entering school grounds with a knife.
"There are also incidents of students with special needs leaving the school ground without permission or supervision.
"There has been several occasions when groups of teenagers have come into the playground harassing staff after school hours and in one instance damaging a vehicle parked in the grounds.
"Used needles have also been found around the grounds."
