During a unit of work on feral animals, Wellington Public School won the Enviro-Stories competition along with St Laurence's, Forbes and Dubbo South Primary.

It was a proud moment when Central West Local Land Services Officer Catie Guise handed class K6HK copies of their book to take home, as well as copies for the class and school library.

Teacher Kate Kiss said it had been an exciting moment when she received the phone call and told the class the good news.

"We were very proud of the hard work and the teamwork that went into our book and we were thrilled to be told that we had won the competition and that our book would be published," she said.

Enviro-Stories will also create an ebook version with special sound effects.

"This program encourages teachers and students to research environmental topics and then create a storybook. We researched feral animals in our local area and joined together in the writing and the design of our own story book," teacher Kate Kiss said.

She said competitors tried to write about pests relevant to their area and Wellington chose a fox for their book Who Got the Chickens?

"We looked at how a fox affects farms and farm life. In our book each character is talking about different things such as foxes doing harm to livestock," Ms Kiss said.

Following their success, Wellington Public School is already looking forward to entering the competition again next year.
