As I reported last week, the Mumbil landfill has been closed and only bulk bins are available at the facility.

I've got more details as to why this has happened.
The Environmental Protection Authority received a complaint regarding the tip, and as already had been reported, large amounts of asbestos sheeting, as well as tyres and hazardous household chemicals had been illegally dumped at the site.
Council is in the process of cleaning this up, something that isn't an easy task.
Another problem with the landfill is that the life of the site has expired.
I'm told that the current pit is full and council cannot dig another.
The decision was made to close facility as a result of EPA concerns as well as safety concerns.
I'm told an independent audit of all council's waste facilities has been completed and the findings will be presented at the next council meeting.
I will be looking closely at the report and its recommendations. Where I fully support the decision of the general manager to close the Mumbil Tip, we must create sustainable and safe waste facilities for all our villages and surrounding rural landholders. Something I will work hard to achieve.
Until next week,
Councillor Marcus Hanney
