John Vane rode with the Ben Hall gang during 1863 which coincided with some of their most audacious activities. Vane was the only member of the gang of 1863 to survive. Following the death of his best mate in a gun battle near Rockley, Vane left the gang and surrendered to a Priest near Carcoar. The remaining members all died a violent death by the bullet; either by police or private citizen. -

An extract from a review by Inside History magazine: "Using painstaking research into people, place and interconnections, along with dozens of photographs, Bratby creates a real sense of the man and his network: Vane's convict forebears, extended family, fellow bushrangers, victims and opponents alike all emerge as three-dimensional figures. It's a family history wrapped into a community history of New South Wales' Western districts."-
