ALART WINS A DRAMATIC DAY AT THE WELLINGTON BOOT
The fate of two of the best jockeys in the state changed in the twinkling of an eye on a dramatic Wellington Boot day.
Last years winning hoop Winona Costin was speared into air when her horse Stable Surprise clipped the heels of a galloper in front her in the Wellington Cup (1700m).The star jockey was probably concussed officials said and was taken to Dubbo Hospital with a sore neck and blurred vision and was replaced for the Wellington Boot.
The Federal Hotel Wellington Cup was won by Collar ($3fav) with local jockey Greg Ryan aboard.
The Statewide Sheds Wellington Boot was delayed while Costin was taken to hospital but eventually the biggest 2 year old race in the bush was ready.
Punters sent out Godolphin stable galloper Igraine as a hot favourite at $1.70 in the ring, $1.90 on the TAB.
The hot pick was right amongst them early as Neil Osborne trained For Me Dad raced away in front and turning still had the lead over Igraine but the master riding of Australia’s best country jockey was on offer.
Greg Ryan chasing the Cup/Boot double surged Alart($5.50) to the lead and it won storming away by just over a length from Igraine ($1.90) with For Me Dad third ($13).
Ryan said the horse gave him the perfect run and he was excited to win the big double on a track he knew better than any other.
The Scone horse trained by Pat Farrell had been highly supported at the Saturday night Soldiers Club calcutta ‘’ A very good win’’ Mr Farrell ‘’ So good I needed the money’’
The Soldiers Memorial Town Plate was a thriller Zahron ($9) with Matthew Cahill beating Just Crewsin ($7) by a head.
Cowra trainer Andrew Molloy taking home the winner. The owner former Canberra Raiders rugby league star Ashley Gilbert was emotional after the race.
‘’That was fabulous, amazing please get yourself into horse racing. I have played rugby league in front of 48,000 people in a grand final of the NRL but this is better’’ Mr Gilbert who hails from Crookwell said.

9.46: Alart a strong hope in today's Boot
Greg Polson, Racenet - 29 Mar 2015
Trainer Pat Farrell has carefully plotted a course for his smart filly Alart he hopes will result in winning Sunday’s $100,000 State Wide Wellington Boot (1100m).
"The Boot is worth a lot of money and it’s been the plan all along,” Farrell said. "That’s why I ran her in Sydney last start. I took her there to top her off for the Boot.
"I haven’t trialled her or anything just kept the work up to her.
"She’s done well enough to be ready. I’m happy with her.”
Farrell’s plan has been made easier with the news impressive last start Wagga winner Beau Tirage and Black Opal Stakes winner Takedown were scratched.
Trainer Keith Dryden said Beau Tirage would not go after drawing barrier 12 and was likely to start in Sydney on Wednesday.
Farrell, 73, has a high opinion of Alart, a daughter of British stallion Excellent Art.
He secured her as a yearling for a meagre $10,000.
"After her first two gallops I went back to the sales and bought her half-sister for $20,000,” Farrell added. "Alart showed ability right from day one.
"She’s a good mannered filly, no ratbag in her and she can gallop.”
Alart made her debut with a fifth at Tamworth on September 30, a race "she should have won,” Farrell maintained then scored over 900m at Scone on October 16 when ridden by champion bush hoop Greg Ryan.
Resuming from a 115-day spell Alart scored an impressive win in fast time over 1000m at Dubbo on February 8.
Farrell then threw her in the deep end when she contested the Silver Slipper (1100m) at Rosehill on February 21. Alart finished fifth to one time Golden Slipper favourite Headwater.
"It was a good run at Rosehill in that sort of class,” Farrell said. "She pulled up well after it.
"We’re in there Sunday with a great chance and I’m more than happy to have Greg Ryan aboard. He knows Wellington backwards. She’s drawn well (barrier two) and should be up there early.”
Farrell admitted he was surprised when Ryan rang him to take the ride in Sydney.
"Greg wanted to stick with the filly. We’ve been mates for a long time,” Farrell added.
