Wellington’s inaugural Bridge Congress was held on the weekend of the 14th and 15th March at St Mary’s School Hall, which proved to be the perfect venue for hosting a bridge tournament. The tournament attracted over 100 bridge players from all over the district and beyond, including a formidable team from Canberra.

Peter Reed, the congress organiser, was absolutely thrilled with the event, saying that, “it was more about Wellington than bridge” and “judging by the comments and numerous complimentary emails the club has received we achieved our goals”.
Playing in the Canberra team was John Brockwell, a legend in bridge circles. On receiving his winner’s prize for the team’s event on the Sunday he commented that in all his years of attending bridge congresses across Australia, “Wellington has put on one of the best, if not the best, congresses I have ever been to”.
Without doubt though, one of the highlights of the weekend was the food. Participants were treated to a delicious assortment of home cooked fare and served an al fresco lunch in a delightful covered area overlooking the school grounds.
Notably, it was the sumptuous lunches on both the Saturday and Sunday that sparked the most positive comments amongst the group. Lunch was provided by Wellington’s inimitable “Pot Stirrers”, Carol White and Ro Barton, and their beautifully prepared meals drew rave reviews, with one lady from Narromine remarking that the next congress could be suitably renamed, “the Gourmet Congress”.
Summing up, Peter Reed stated that, “The congress had ticked all the boxes and was a huge success. Wellington is a minnow in bridge playing circles but all club members had worked together and achieved a fabulous result for Wellington and bridge”.
