''I am so disappointed a big company like this is leaving us. Surely a major corporate like this can help country towns like us even if their a small loss leader.'' Mrs Cooper said.
''Its a sad week for Wellington''
''This is my last shop there and I am buying goods for the Uniting Church's Samaritan purse where we make, buy and send things to send to children in places like Laos, Vietnam and other South East Asian countries'' she said. ''Very sad I can no longer buy things here its the sign of the times''
For David and Susan Bean of the Gold Coast it was the first time they had been to Wellington. The visitors upset Target was going from the community.
"We were driving through this lovely town and thought what a shame, every shop is empty."
"We do feel communities like this somehow should be helped to survive."
They were very attractive buildings and this means it will end up being a ghost town they are not going to have a community anymore which is very sad."
"We see this a lot in rural areas, it empties the character of the township which has been built up over 100 years."
Local Ron Goninan who had led a campaign to save the Target store from closure saw the inevitable.
''This is so sad for this town. It looks like the streets are closing. Its hurts the local economy, the jobs''
Others who the Times talked said they were heartbroken the changing world of technology playing a big part.
"Our Target Wellington store will close at the end of trading on Saturday 31st January. This is obviously a difficult time for our team members, and we understand that our customers and the broader Wellington community are disappointed that their store is closing. It's never our preferred option to close a store, but unfortunately Target Wellington has been underperforming for some time now. Target will continue to operate its stores in Dubbo and Mudgee." a spokesperson for Target said.
Target's closure comes at the same time as the closure of the Macquarie Bakery which closed its doors on Thursday while Home and Office shut down last week.
