Developing creativity in play, children at Wellington Public School have been taking up reading, writing, painting and dress-ups at lunch with instructional leader of literacy and numeracy, Pam Davis.

Mrs Davis said the program was partly developed to make the transition from preschool to the primary school playground easier, but also to facilitate more interaction and problem solving among students from kindergarten to year 2, rather than have them play in small groups.
"They play dress-ups and become a different person for the lunch hour," she said.
Some days they also make cubby houses out of boxes and sheets.
She said she was noticing more creativity among the students and expected it would probably flow through into their schoolwork.
Mrs Davis said the development of creativity was important for early development, not just when it came to skills like painting but also for the development of an "open-ended" type of thinking and an ability to solve problems.
