The seven full-time staff and eight casual staff at Target Country were told last Wednesday their jobs were gone.
A spokesperson for Target has said the company would try and find jobs for these staff members.
"We have taken the difficult decision to close our Target Wellington store, with the last day of trading planned for 31st of January" the Target spokesperson said.
"Unfortunately the store has been underperforming for some time now.
"We have worked closely with our landlord to improve the store, however, despite their willingness to contribute, this was not enough to make the store financially viable."
Cr Rod Buhr said the closure was bad for Wellington.
"This is very disappointing news, it's not just losing the store but the eight employees and the casual staff who are losing their jobs.
"It will have a significant negative impact on our local economy," he said

Target said it would look to find the employees jobs.
"We will look to redeploy team members to our Dubbo store where possible and in other Wesfarmers businesses," the spokesperson said.
Cr Buhr said he and the general manager had asked for a meeting with Target's management.
"Council has requested a meeting with Target to find out the rationale behind closing the store and if there were any alternatives," he said.
"I have spoken with the owner of the building and assured him council will work with him and our local estate agents in sourcing a new tenant."
The Wellington Business Chamber's president Ian Law said he was shocked and devastated by the news.
"This is a big blow for local business and jobs in Wellington and the chamber will do all it can to assist council with negotiating for a new viable business to move into the former Target store," he said. "We a very concerned about this."
The Times spoke with an employee of the store in confidence who said she was upset for the employees but also the town.
"This will be a huge loss for Wellington. Huge," she said.
