12.02 : The Hill Stakes is crucial for former South African trainer David Payne.
A brutally honest David Payne will put Criterion's Cox Plate ambitions on the line, claiming if his Australian Derby hero cannot win the Hill Stakes he will not have any chance in Australasia's weight-for-age championship.
"I would want him to be winning a race like this, otherwise he can't win the Cox Plate," Payne said of Criterion's D-Day at Randwick on Saturday. "You've got to be realistic and you're going to meet a stronger field in the Cox Plate, for sure."
The veteran Rosehill trainer is even more steadfast in his belief Criterion's last-start Chelmsford Stakes flop is best forgiven.
Criterion and favourite Entirely Platinum floundered in the wet over the Randwick mile as Chris Waller prepared the first six horses home a fortnight ago.
"It was just one of those days and I wouldn't worry too much about it – he'll be back to his normal self," Payne said.
"More than anything it might have been the early move Hughie [Bowman] made on him. He went early at the 800 [metres] and it was the wrong decision, but that happens.
"We'll try to ride him a bit more like the Derby and the Rosehill Guineas. And I think the ground will be fine too, which will suit him."
Singapore-based Corey Brown will take over from Bowman, who misses the George Main Stakes meeting through suspension.
Payne's Hill Stakes hand will also include the pint-sized Honorius, who will skirt around the top-level staying events this spring in search of another stakes win.
"He's a little horse and he might have reached his level, but that's where he is so you've got to take them on," Payne said. "He'll be better off on the firm tracks and he's much better off on top of the ground too."
The well-weighted Paederos, with Winona Costin up, looks placed to advantage in the Randwick opener for Payne, but of more pressing concern is the condition of cups contender Terrubi before he exits quarantine at Newmarket to arrive in Australia.
The French import has a recent success at 2800 metres over Brown Panther, who crushed his rivals in the Irish St Leger on the weekend.
"He's a nice horse and he looks fine," Payne said. "Once he matures he'll be a better horse. We'll assess him once he comes out here and decide if he goes around or not. I'm not going to force him.
"If he doesn't look like he's going to make it this year I'll pull the plug. The form is there and we've just got to get him back to being himself."

11.54 : Great story by Fairfax Media's Adam Pengilly.
When every last gram counts, even the hat matters.
"It helps my head sweat," Brenton Avdulla responds when asked if he could remove it for a photo while frenetically smacking the pads.
The hat comes off for a moment – but he is reluctant. On stays the skins top. And the skins bottom. The sweat suit doesn't move. It's covered by a thick tracksuit jumper. Tracksuit pants are also the norm.
["Being in this industry, it’s probably 10 per cent highs and 90 per cent lows": Avdulla.]
"Being in this industry, it’s probably 10 per cent highs and 90 per cent lows": Avdulla.
All that despite the group 1 heat in the manufactured gym, only known to the regulars who wind down an unassuming driveway to enter.
This correspondent, now on the other end of the pads that seem to be copping blows with increasing ferocity, discarded a lightweight training top after barely two minutes of spending an hour in Avdulla's lot.
You quickly learn this is a numbers game. Racing always has been. Five ... Ten ... Fifteen ... Twenty ... Five to go ... Time!

10.22am: Also to the south the Grenfell Cup meeting is on and a racing lover and one of Australia's best known poets was born there. Henry Lawson who was born on a Grenfell Goldfield has a race named after him today.
The Grenfell Record promotes the Henry Lawson Loaded Dog Cup very well.
10.18am: Wonderful Australian racing history at a little place near Walgett in Central Western New South Wales with a fantastic name.
The unusually named village is situated on the Baradine Creek, with the name originating from William Colless's property, Come-by-Chance station.
Come-By-Chance was once a central meeting spot for station owners in the district. Life out west is not as hectic these days with just the community hall providing a focus for entertainment - outside race-day, of course. It was thought that all land in the area had been allocated but, as the name suggests, one came by chance to the Colless family property when it was found to have been missed during the selection.
Colless later owned the post office, hotel, police station, blacksmith shop and cemetery and at one stage Come-By-Chance was believed to be the only privately owned village in the southern hemisphere. Cattle and sheep were grazed in the early days and since the 1960s cereal and legume crops have been grown.
Around late September every year, thousands - and the odd horse or two - converge on the tiny settlement to cheer home the winner of the Come-By-Chance Picnic Cup (1400m).
Racing began at Come-By-Chance mid-way through last century and has thrived ever since.
"The club's been racing for at least 55 years," "It was started by locals and one of them, Albie Slack-Smith, used to own Brooklyn Maid which at one stage was one of the favourites for the Golden Slipper. "Most stations back then had horses and the jackaroos used to ride work for the owners, so the racing evolved from that."
The races did not run in 2007 due to Equine Influenza.
10.14am: Wonderful history at Royal Randwick today.
Members of Australian Turf Club will view a rare piece of racing history on Saturday, with the only documentary ever made of one of Australia’s greatest ever racehorses while he was still alive screened at Royal Randwick.
The Mighty Conqueror – a ten-minute film about Phar Lap completed in late 1931 – will be played continuously throughout George Main Stakes Day inside the former Secretary’s Room near the Heritage Gallery inside the Officials Grandstand from midday to 4pm.
The screening of the documentary comes after the canister containing the original 35mm nitrate film was uncovered by the doyen of Sydney racing media, Max Presnell, which he donated to Australian Turf Club.
The Club in turn passed on the film to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), which recognised its cultural and historical significance, and it is now preserved by the NFSA in its audio-visual collection.
The film features close ups of Phar Lap being 'modelled' by his legendary strapper Tommy Woodcock, rare footage at trackwork, and includes interviews with several of the most important people in his story, including jockey Jim Pike and trainer and co-owner Harry Telford.
Phar Lap [pictured left] is also filmed winning several races, including his famous 1930 Melbourne Cup, and the 1931 Randwick Plate, run on 10 October 1931. That latter event, was a two-horse race as no local trainer was prepared to run against Phar Lap in a weight-for-age race, and is the only known footage of the race and the last time the 'Red Terror' would run at a Sydney race meeting.
The Mighty Conqueror finishes with Phar Lap being loaded on to the Ulimaroa at Sydney docks in November 1931, bound for a spell in New Zealand, before his voyage to the USA and a date with destiny in the Agua Caliente Handicap in Mexico.
Although the NFSA already had prints of The Mighty Conqueror in its collection, these were just 'safety film' copies that had been made from an elusive original nitrate. It is believed the 35mm nitrate print found by Max Presnell may be the original source of the copies held in the NFSA's collection.
The film was produced by Neville Macken with the help of pioneer female filmmaker Paulette McDonagh. Australian Turf Club Heritage Society officer Margaret Helback said the film was a stunning piece of the history of Sydney racing and Royal Randwick.
“This is indeed one of the more rare pieces of racing history we have ever come across and we are very grateful for Max’s help and also the NFSA for taking ownership of it for future generations," Ms Helback said.
NFSA CEO Michael Loebenstein said: “We are grateful for this kind donation from the Australian Turf Club, which will now be preserved at Australia's ‘living archive’. The acquisition of this 35mm nitrate film print of The Mighty Conqueror is of particular significance to our sporting film holdings as it is unique to any collection, both in Australia or abroad."
Australian Turf Club has moved the Phar Lap memorial at Royal Randwick on Saturday to a new home. Inscribed “A Nobel Horse”, the memorial meant much to Noel Hickey, who for many years laid a wreath at the stone decorated with red, black and white ribbons (the colours of Phar Lap’s silks). The Phar Lap memorial is in the gardens just beyond the Theatre of the Horse.
9.48am: At Caulfield today the time honoured Underwood Stakes will be run with an all star field going around. Our analyst Damon Anderson from Winning Ways says :
''The lead ups have been impressive and the G1 WFA Underwood Stakes over 1800m presents Foreteller a distance he has excelled. The PB Lawrence run at Caulfield was eye catching, followed by the G2 Feehan at Moonee Valley where he flew home from last to go close.'' he said '' His winning performances have come from a quiet sit throughout and a blistering late charge. Champion hoop Glen Boss will need his experience to get him into clear ground late in running.''
Early market order is Silent Achiever ($3.00) Foreteller (4.8) Stipulate (6.5) and the Offer (7.0)
