At the public school there were special visits from sporting greats including a Manly rugby league player and cricketer Sally Moylan.
With lots of activities for the day, Wellington Public School principal Denis Anderson said there was a lot of excitement among the children.
"The day is very important to us as we are on Wiradjuri land," he said, adding that with 50 per cent of the school population being Aboriginal it was a chance to celebrate.
"We recognise there have been atrocities towards Aboriginal people in the past and we are here to celebrate the significance of Aboriginal people to the land and how we can share our experience in Wellington together," Mr Anderson said.
