In the end it was win for the ages, the Dubbo Rhino’s capturing their first Graincorp Cup Northern Conference Rugby Union title over a gallant Yeoval 19-14.
The match was played in sloppy conditions in the second half and Yeoval in front of a large crowd of probably 2,000 people at their home ground led but mistakes let them down in the end.
The home side got off to a blistering start winger Josh Lees skirting defenders to score out wide on the right side, James Aimey landed a difficult conversion.
Yeoval had all the ball early and attacked putting sustained pressure on the Rhino’s who were eventually caught out but soon they levelled winger Darren Willoughby stepping through defenders, Kane Rich potting the extras.
The defence in the midfield was torrid at one stage three of the biggest Rhinos were laid out on the field and this time not long before half time Yeoval came surging again full back Isaac Kinscher putting the home side in front 12-7 and Aimy adding the extra two points.
The Rhinos did try and hit back but Yeoval’s defensive platform again held strong and went into the break ahead by a converted try.
The rain came again and heavier in the second half and 45metre penalty attempt by Yeoval just missed and then the home side was forced to defend under relenting pressure.
Finally the Rhinos found a way through full back Kade Goodwin went over in the right hand corner.
Behind by 2 points The Rhinos appeared to have the momentum with them and the penalty count was rising against an ill disciplined Yeoval gave the visitors the opportunity to drive up the field and when Rob Dovey raced over after an overlap was created the Dubbo supporters rivalled the sea of blue and yellow on the other side of the field for noise levels.
A few minutes late the rain was lessening and some mistakes in attacking positions cost Yeoval dearly, despite winning 11 premierships at home this grand final victory was heading to Dubbo. The minor premiers holding on for a 19-14 victory.
Yeoval captain Nic Job said ‘’ We were outplayed today. They were too good’’.
Rob Dovey said he was proud of the commitment shown by his playing group ‘’ We knew of Yeoval’s great record and talked about how they would be and I am proud of the way the players have won this’’
It sparked celebrations around the game, Yeoval players sat on the ground this was a thrilling grand final, one of the ages.
