Canteen volunteer Yvonne Redfern said there were currently 38 volunteers helping in the canteen and that didn't count the many people who dropped in cakes, slices and other food to sell.

She said it was wonderful to see so many facets of the community working together, including all of the church groups, students from the schools (with St Mary's sending four students to help each day), members of the Men's Shed and many more.

Eighty per cent of the money raised in the canteen would help support scripture teaching at Wellington High School.

Yvonne Redfern said that many people who volunteered, whether or not they went to church, felt that scripture was an important part of education.

Wellington High School scripture teacher Tom Owen said he thought the one thing everyone agreed on was the importance for all people to think seriously about their identity, faith and ethics.

"Scripture classes do not 'Bible bash' students - they simply give students an opportunity to think through some of the bigger questions in life," he said. "I present to them what the Bible has to say. At a key stage in adolescent development, students are given the opportunity to slow down and think through what they believe and why they believe it."

Other beneficiaries of the canteen fundraising are the Men's Shed 10 per cent and the Eisteddfod, 10 per cent.
