Faced with a $750,000 bill to fix it, Council has appointed councillors David Grant and Graham Cross to work with locals on a plan.
"I believe this is very exciting for the community," Cr Buhr said.
"We want this to be a tourism showpiece for the town so we'll be working with museum curator to get things moving here."
Museum curator Dorothy Blake says the committee at the Wellington Historical Society are backing the council and happy to work with it.
The Terms of Reference for Wellington will include:
o developing and submitting a grant application to the Powerhouse Museum; and
o seeking funding to progress a Wellington Museum Strategic Plan.
A report to the council said if the grant application was successful it would undertake a tender process to select a suitable and technically qualified consultant.
The committee would project manage the subsequent development of the Strategic Plan and recommend the next steps forward following receipt of the Strategic Plan for the Wellington Museum
