It has been seven years since a Buddhist centre was first established in Wellington and this year, following the move to Arthur Street, Tharpa Choeling has been a hive of activity.

An enlightenment stupa (a symbol of enlightened mind) was recently completed containing sacred objects and texts.
Teacher at the centre, Venerable Tenzin, said it represented enlightenment for everyone; a blessing for all beings including the sheep and cattle that pass the centre on the highway.
“Our motivation makes it good because we want all beings to be free from suffering,” she said.
When asked how Buddhism could benefit a small town like Wellington she said she felt all religion played an important part in communities.
“The Dalai Lama says all religion can be beneficial and if we take that view we must have some way to be included,” she said.
The centre has been running courses every Friday from 6-7pm at 166 Arthur Street.
Today is week two of a meditation course on healing with breath, light and the elements.
It is by donation and everyone is encouraged to come along.
Due to public holidays on April 18th and 25th, there will be no meditations on those two evenings.
