Redbacks win a grinding local derby

Wellington’s forwards have set up a grinding victory over Yeoval in the ANFD cup rugby union local derby at Montefories 25-8.

The Redbacks led 13-0 at the break and were fought to tough out the win.

‘’We expected them to be very tough and they were’’ Redbacks captain Peter Graham explained.

‘’We actually feared them more than we do Trangie next week actually and there were imposing but I am very pleased’’ Coach Chris George said.

Wellington and Yeoval gave no quarter in early part of match and Wellington’s ever present half Dan Baxter stole a ball from a scrum to scurry down the sideline to open the home side’s account, David Grant converting.

The Wellington winger also booted two penalty goals to give the Redbacks a buffer at the break.

The opening stouch was just that, some scuffles broke out in the second half but it didn’t effect the competition leaders game plan as break away Jack Redfern surged over from close range and second rower Dan Gersbach bashed his up the middle to score.

Bruce Lees got all the defending premiers points, scoring himself right in the corner with minutes left but by that time Wellington had controlled the match in the end powering to a very controlled 25-8 win.

‘’ We are confident heading toward the finals, we are playing well’’he said ‘’ Yes the coach (Chris George) has made a big difference to us’’ as Wellington celebrates its best year for some time but anxious not to put the mocker on itself heading into the business end of the season.
