This Saturday sees the Wellington Redbacks travel to Yeoval to play the Eagles for the 10th annual Gordon Davis Cup clash.
The Gordon Davis cup was first played in 2002 to honour the memory of a local Rugby legend Gordon Davis.
Gordon played and coached the Yeoval Eagles, as well as being coach of the Wellington Redbacks when they came into the central west competition in 1960.
In a long and distinguished rugby career Gordon represented Australia in two tests against the New Zealand All Blacks in 1955 as well playing for NSW City and NSW Country on many occasions.
The first match for the Gordon Davis Cup saw Yeoval hold the bragging rights after beating the more fancied Wellington side at Yeoval 35 points to 15.
This was a great feat for a side playing in a lower level of competition.
Games between the local rivals have always been fiercely contested with many hard fought and close battles
Saturday’s match will see both teams coming into the game as last start winners with the Redbacks in second spot on the ladder having beaten Coonabarabran 17—9,and Yeoval, currently in fifth spot after downing competition newcomers Cumnock 20—5.
The Redbacks’ playing strength this year has been the ability to field a full side and bench each week and with several older players returning to the park and also the addition of several new players to the roster competition for a place in the run on side is keen.
This is a luxury the club has not had for a few years
The match is scheduled to kick off at 3.15pm at the Yeoval Sports ground.
