Redbacks bite back to topple competition leaders

Wellington has toppled the competition leaders Coonabarabran 17-9 in a ANFD Cup match at Kennard Park 17-9.

“It was hard fought and we were very disciplined,” coach Chris George said.

The penalty count and some poor ball control was hurting the Redbacks early and Coonabarabran’s Daniel Oakes landing a goal to give the visitors an early lead.

Possession was rare for the Redbacks but when they actually grabbed the ball the ever present half Nick Rogers shuffled through the defence and the Redbacks after 20 minutes were ahead, fullback David Grant piloted the extras.

Oakes grabbed two more penalty strikes and at half time Coonabarabran held sway 9-7.

The second began half with the visiting team on the attack but a dropped ball was pounced on by Wellington and Josh Bullock raced over out wide and the Redback were ahead 12-7.

Coonabarabran with loads of possession and some running rugby looked dangerous and twice were held up over the line by courageous defence and at other times were cut down short of the try line and even missed a penalty which could have cut the buffer but when Steven Matheson stormed off some quality lead up which including two impressive line breaks, Wellington were over the line 19-7 winning a tight match in which it never surrendered a try.

“I am very pleased with them, they fought well,” George said. Wellington now are second after Trangie upset Coolah while Yeoval slugged out a 20-5 win over Cumnock to keep them in fifth position.
