Wellington Cowboys coach Brian Johnson believes good defence laid the platform for its 50-14 win over Narromine in a Group 11 rugby league match at Kennard Park.
The match was witnessed by Canberra and Country representative Blake Ferguson who said he was impressed by his old team the Cowboys.
That was not the case early as Narromine crossed first Alex Sandbrook dashing off a ‘play the ball’ to open the Jets account, seconds later winger Robbie Burns almost widened the buffer but was wrestled into touch.
After 20 minutes Wellington finally got their act together after what their coach described as wasting the football when Nathan Thompson stepped through some poor defence after the Jets had most of the possession.
But Narromine’s control of the ball was working, with Trent Jacobson’s swirling cross kick finding Michael Walsh in the corner but Wellington replied quickly with Troy Osborne going over from dummy half.
Jonathan Newman’s dismissal to the sin bin at 30 minutes was unhelpful for Narromine and Ben McGregor, fresh from representative duty, made an immediate impact. Kane Ashby also found space to run more than 60 metres and at half-time it was Wellington 22-10.
Right after time, replacement Alistaire Beale kicked over Narromine heads then regained to score, and Luke Healey in only his second first grade match set up a storming Rian Humphries.
Now trailing 34-10 Narromine were desperate and Mitchell Cale busted down the right flank, but when Chris Daley stole the ball, Alistaire Beale again kicked and re gathered and Jayden Chatfield worked well on the left the game was over.
‘’We did waste too much football and tried to do too much’’ the Wellington coach said.
“Our tackling was very sound and our younger players, Jayden Chatfield and Luke Healey, were strong,’’ he said.
