We are already two weeks in - wow, time has flown since our Try Rugby night.
Firstly, we would like to thank all those parents who assisted us with the Boot barbecue.
We had an extremely successful day which will go a long way to assisting all our boys for the season.
Week 1: The Under 17’s were against Dubbo Blues. They did themselves very proud on the day. They only had 15 players for the game and two of them were injured early on. Dubbo had 11 subs for the game and kindly gave us two players.
The boys were defeated 15-10, however, they came close to winning as they were camped on Dubbo’s line with five minutes to go. Jake Newman scored their only try which was converted spectacularly from the sideline by Callum Styles. Callum also added a penalty to the final score.
For the Under 15’s first game they also travelled to Dubbo to play against the Dubbo Blues.
The score in this game was 17-0 in Dubbo’s favour. Given it was a new year with new players signing up the boys started slowly.
However, there were some positive signs in the second half as the boys managed to hold their own.
Given another couple of weeks with the boys trialling new positions, hopefully they will improve.
This Saturday the Under 13’s travelled to Mudgee to play Mudgee 1’s. The team has taken on a new look this year with some boys joining to play rugby for the first time.
They have been trying very hard and training and are just beginning to find their feet.
For a first game they had a wonderful start with the Redbacks winning 22-0. The boys scored four tries in total - Brad McCarroll (3) and Jake Styles. Jake Styles completed the conversions.
Week 2: The Under 17’s travelled to Parkes on Saturday with 18 players this time.
The team is slowly combining well together, getting some good on-the-field partnerships going, with the league boys learning at lightning speed.
The final score for this game was 31-10 in the boys’ favour. It was a fairly even contest in the first half. The forwards eventually got on top and the back line fired well.
The boys scored five tries in total - Brad Collins, Dylan West (2), Kurt Stokes and Jake Newman. Callum Styles converted two tries and Ronald West 1. Hughesy was very pleased with the overall effort from the whole team.
For week two the Under 15’s headed to Orange. The boys, at the start, still seemed to be finding their feet as Orange City 2 ran in early points.
However the boys continued to work at it and they really hit their straps in the last 15 minutes of the game, coming home very strongly.
Given another 10 minutes and the word was the boys probably would have run away with the game.
If the boys continue to work on their defence they will become a very formidable team.
Tries this game were scored by Sam Hunt, Lachlan Styles, and Zac McManus.
The Under 13 boys again had to travel to Mudgee this week to play Mudgee 2’s. This is the older team of Mudgee’s two teams.
The score for this game was 29-5 in favour of Mudgee. While the boys were defeated in this game, they played hard all game.
Credit particularly needs to be given to two boys who received two really hard hits but who got straight back up and back into it - Aaron Grasnick and Wes Cosier. Aaron Kitch scored the boys only try this game.
Snow believes this Mudgee team will be the yardstick for the rest of the year, something for the boys to work towards.
Lastly we would like to offer our best wishes for a continued speedy recovery for Noella Baker.
