There might have been 54 starters at last Saturday’s individual stroke event however it was the course that came out overall winner.
There was high praise for the course which is a credit to the greens staff.
The volunteer mowing staff are also acknowledged for their input. The day was generously sponsored by the Wellington Soldiers’ Memorial Club.
A highlight of last Saturday’s play was Ron Cowan’s victory over Brian Kiss in the matchplay championships.
Coming from behind, Cowan managed to score the win after a long 22 holes. Could this be the year of the old(er) players making a mark especially following on from Colin Arnold’s effort the previous week.
On Saturday David Naveau won the Monthly Medal for A grade with 69 and Michael MacMaster winning it for B grade with 71.
A grade runner-up was Kurt Cusack 70 and B grade runner-up was Neil Hollow 72.
Ball competition winners went out to net 75 scores and included Brian Kiss and Luke Brydon 71, Ron Cowan and Peter Cornish 72, Rod Pedron, Kevin Reid, Vic Payne, Stephen Whittaker and James Cusack 74, Kevin Athanasiou, Col Arnold, Stephen McCarroll and Ian Manning 75.
Ron Stubberfield Toyota Terrific Tee Shot winners were Ben McCarthy third, Stephen McCarroll eighth, Luke Brydon fourteenth and John Southwell sixteenth.
Kurt Cusack won the McCarthy-Staggs Tiling nearest the pin in two shots on the fifteenth hole. McDonald’s Biggest Whack winners were James Cusack A grade and Paul Hannelly B grade. Reid Armstrong’s net 91 earned him the Brydon Encouragement Award.
Tomorrow’s event is a four ball best ball sponsored by the golf club.
Next week’s event is an individual stableford sponsored by Darren Whiteley and round two of the Kiss Trophy.
Handicap changes from last week’s play are: Neil Hollow 14 to 13, Michael MacMaster 17 to 16, David Naveau 9 to 8, Rod Pedron 16 to 15, Reid Armstrong 19 to 20, Peter Bryant 25 to 26, Nick Cosier 8 to 10, Jamie Hunt 28 to 29, Robert Ridley 7 to 8, John Southwell 23 to 24 and Geoff Walker 13 to 14.
The A grade matchplay championships are to be played between Ben McCarthy and James Cusack and Gary Cusack playing son Mitchell.
This came following Ben McCarthy’s defeat of Kurt Cusack, James Cusack won on a forfeit from John Donnelly, Gary Cusack defeated Gary Holding and Mitchell Cusack defeated Robert Baker.
In A Reserve Clinton Ridley defeated Tim Parker, Kevin Athanasiou defeated Ian Manning, Paul West defeated David Naveau and Joshua Bullock defeated Robert Ridley.
The semi-finals are between Clinton Ridley and Kevin Athanasiou, Joshua Bullock and Paul West.
In B grade, Ron Cowan defeated Brian Kiss after 22 holes, Rodney Cunynghame defeated Lewis Stanley, Neil Hollow defeated Paul Hannelly and Russell Gersbach defeated Norm Royal.
The semi-finals have Ron Cowan playing Rodney Cunynghame and Neil Hollow playing Russell Gersbach.
In C grade Bill Bright defeated Colin Arnold, Vic Payne defeated Bob Watts, David Wilson defeated Stephen Whittaker and Mal Scott defeated Peter Bryant.
In the semis Bill Bright plays Vic Payne and David Wilson plays Mal Scott.
