An excavator on a semi trailer struck the bridge shattering it and the truck plunged into the river. The bridge is the main one over the Macquarie River.
A new bridge which now stands there was constructed and it cut the town in half, many of those living in Montefiores will remember coming into the town for supplies by a train which is features in our photo. You can see a photo gallery from the bridge collapse on the Times website.
