Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in parts of southeast Queensland this afternoon, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Kingaroy, Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi are among the areas likely to be affected.

However, according to the warning, issued at 3:31 pm today, the thunderstorms were moving eastward and forecast to affect Lowood and Fernvale by 4:05 pm, and Mount Nebo and Highvale by 4:35 pm.

Emergency Management Queensland was advising people in affected areas to: move their cars under cover or away from trees; secure loose outdoor items, seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees; avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm; and beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning was also current for the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego and southeast coast districts.
