The Redbacks hosted the Canowindra Pythons in last weekend’s ANFD Cup in what could have been a season-defining game for the local team with the Pythons placed just outside the top five.
Wellington started well with a lot of backing up and strong clean outs which led to the Redbacks’ tryline with Tim Cusack crossing taking the score to 5-0.
The Pythons’ fitness failed to match up to the Redbacks resulting in the majority of ball possession going the way of the home side, therefore it wasn’t too long before Cam Batho crashed over the line off a five-metre lineout, with Golden Boot adding the extras to take the score to 12-0.
Midway through the first half the Pythons struck back thanks to a Sam Frogley cut-out pass which hit the Canowindra centre straight on the chest. He then ran 60 metres to score taking the half-time score to 21-7.
The second half saw the Redbacks really put the hammer down bagging 38 unanswered points.
Cam Batho and Tim Cusack both scored three tries each for the day and Rooster George and Mitch Brien bagged one each.
Jared Wykes also got over the line before dropping it while trying to put it down, but paid the referee fuel money to get home so it too was awarded.
The AgnVet points for the game went to Tim Cusack on the wing who had a great game in attack and defence, picking up a well deserved three points, two points went to Cam Batho and Sam Frogley picked up one point as well as the J and J Mechanical players’ player award.
Last, but not least, the most prestigious award, the KFC chicks’ pick went to Nathan Simpson (not sure how).
Next week will the Redbacks at home once again hosting the Orange Waratahs at the Spiderdome, so come on down at 3.15pm.
