Resourceful Stanley

03 Jul, 2009 02:23 PM
Wellington Cowboys’ 17-year-old Corey Stanley is giving local football fans plenty of excitement with his ability to play top-grade football.

At different stages of last weekend’s match he became a handful for the opposition.

The Cowboys had a lot of key players running into the best position to receive the ball with the likes of captain Ben McGregor, Todhunter, the Louie brothers, Rian Humphries and good football knowledge from the warhorse Sean Stanley. Anthony Louie showed clips of his previous classy efforts with great kick returns and being a support runner for the forwards.

His brother Mick showed a lot of speed with some good breaks made by the Wellington players.

McGregor led the way with great leadership qualities and a lot of people spoke about how he raised his game performance.

He, along with Stanley, Toddhunter, Burns and the rest of the forward pack really got down and got on with the biff for most of the game against Forbes Magpies.

They showcased some very good solid defence and big hits and had a lot of pride with aggressive running with the ball from the whole forward pack.

The first grade Cowboys were the better team for the whole 80 minutes, got better field position then the Forbes forwards and were very consisted with defending in their red zone.

The reserve grade team is becoming hot on the trot securing five victories.

This Sunday they will face a top-of-the-table clash against Parkes Spacemen.

While the weekend performance had the coaching staff grasping the edge of their seats, the boys had a good lead at half-time of 24-6.

However, towards the end of the game the score became locked up at 28-all.

Smart football saw Lincoln Peckham run the ball and stand in the tackle to produce the match-winning offload to Stuart Haines.

He placed the ball between the middle of the sticks and the local boys won the game 34-28.

The under 18s displayed good tough defence and took an early 16-0 lead.

Forbes then fought back to tie the score at 16-all at half time.

In the dying stages Corey Stanley produced one of the biggest plays of the match with a chip and chase in his team red zone and ran nearly the 80 metres untouched to score in the corner.

Unfortunately after such a big effort he was came up short when kicking for the conversion to see the under 18s go down 26-28.
