The future of junior netball in Wellington is looking bleak.
After two registration days numbers are still at an all-time low.
Wellington netball has been a long standing tradition for many, many years in our community and it would be disheartening if it were to fold.
It is understandable that children and parents have many commitments these days but if your children want to play netball please encourage them to do so. Without this support there will be no competition.
A gala/coaching/activities afternoon was held last Saturday where children were led through skills by volunteers Stacey and her sisters.
Thank you to Brooke and Clare for travelling from Lake Cargelligo to help. It was great to see some new and enthusiastic players participating.
Young players Jessica Francis, Millie Mills and Amelia Dwyer showed an eagerness to learn and enjoyment of the activities presented. Everyone was very excited when Millie scored a goal.
Thanks to those who helped by cooking the barbecue, coaching, cleaning, taking registrations and generally supporting the children.
The committee will have people at the courts every Thursday at 6.30pm between now and April 29 to take registrations for all junior and senior levels which are years K-2, 3-6 and 7-10.
The season will start on May 1, due to holidays and Anzac Day long weekend.
It is anticipated, pending numbers after the first morning (May 1) that Juniors will turn up each week at 9.30am and participate in skills and drills and then play a game in teams which will be made up on the day.
Seniors will also play at 9.30am and so far there will be three teams which will be created by the committee.
This is a first for seniors so now those players who found it hard to get into a team or are new to town can have the chance to play netball and mix with others.
These teams will have a bye every third week. Seniors also have the option of playing in the Thursday twilight competition.
Boys, you are most welcome, netball in Wellington is not just limited to females.
We have a number of male players in the twilight competition, so if you wish to play come and register and we will find a team for you.
Twilight netball is under way; so far it looks as though there will be five teams.
It’s not too late to register, just come to the courts on Thursday (even if you don’t have a team one will be found for you).
Anyone of high school age and over is welcome to play. You must pay your $75 registration fee ($60 for under 17s) before you take the court.
Games will now start at 6.30pm every Thursday to assist all the players to get there on time.
A draw will be created once numbers are finalised.
The next committee meeting will be at the courts April 29 at 6pm. If you have any ideas or suggestions for keeping netball alive in Wellington please speak to Marie Cornish, Stacey Hague or another committee member before the meeting.
