Scorching conditions fail to stop Redfern snaring stableford victory

27 Nov, 2009 09:10 AM
Hot stuff could best sum up last Saturday’s golf at Wellington.

With the temperature in the 40s there was some attrition with at least two players unable to complete the course.

On the other hand another ended up playing 28 holes to avoid his summer competition team-mate having to go out alone.

The day was an individual stableford event with 52 starters and an unknown number of finishers.

Matt Redfern had 42 points to win the day on a count back from Mitchell Spradbrow. Other ball competition winners were Ashley Bullock with 41, Mac Harvey, Lance Noakes, Rodney Cunynghame, John Gersbach, Ben McCarthy and Lewis Payne all with 40 points, James Cusack, Robert Ridley, Fletcher Ivey and Harrison McMahon 39, David Naveau and Peter Cornish 38, Peter Payne, Rod Hampstead and Rod McMahon 37.

Rod just made it in on a count back.

The Ron Stubberfield Toyota Terrific Tee Shot went to Wayne Lang on three, Robert Baker eight, James Cusack 14 and Lewis Payne 16.

Rod Hampstead won the Naveau Earthmoving nearest the pin in two shots on hole 17.

The McDonald’s Biggest Whack went to James Cusack from A grade with a 287 metre drive on hole nine and Tim Parker with an impressive 235 metre B grade effort.

Barry Jeffery obviously acclimatised well to the cool of the clubhouse while doing his bar work in the morning and probably wished he stayed there as his two by 14 point nines earned him the Bradman.

Pat Everingham thought he had the Bradman in the bag with an eight point front nine only to come home with 21 on the back, just sparing him the embarrassment and allowing Barry Jeffery to take it by a point.

There was one visitor for the day, Barry Wright from Ex Services Orange.

Handicap changes were many last week. The fairways are allowing plenty of run at the moment with the resultant drops in handicaps that will probably take those affected years to get shots back.

Ashley Bullock went from 13 to 12, John Gersbach 8 to 7, Mac Harvey 16 to 15, Fletcher Ivey 13 to 12, Lance Noakes 17 to 16, Lewis Payne 7 to 6, Matt Redfern 17 to 16, Norm Royal 17 to 16, Mitchell Spradbrow 20 to 19, Pat Everingham 14 to 15, David French 30 to 31 and Gary McCarroll 8 to 9.

Saturday was also round two of the Keirle’s Pharmacy Summer Competition. In addition the annual Bogeyman Cup was played.

This year it was won by Daffy’s Ducks. The $200 trophy won by the Ducks covers their entry fee into the Keirle’s Pharmacy Summer Competition for the 2009/10 season.

Saturday’s results in the summer competition were Maulers defeated Sectra 9 two up, Dirt Diggers defeated Puppies two up, Good Sorts defeated Westrac one up, Barmen defeated Federal one up, Printer’s Devils defeated Old Fellows four up, Stagg’s Tiling defeated Council Workers three up (Norm Royal was left to play the last four holes on his own with a six-hole lead so something must have happened there), Untouchables defeated Unknowns five up and Daffy’s Ducks defeated Goodsorts one up.

The top eight in the Keirle’s Pharmacy Summer Competition are Montefiores Maulers 10.7, Dirt Diggers 10.6, Goodsorts 10.3, Daffy’s Ducks 10.3, Barmen 10.2, Untouchables 6.5, Printer’s Devils 6.4, Sectra 9 6.4 and the beloved Stagg’s Tiling are coming ninth in the top eight with 6.3.

Tomorrow’s draw for round three is Maulers v Untouchables, Daffy’s Ducks v Sectra 9, Puppies v Studs, Bogeymen v Stagg’s Tiling, Dirt Diggers v Barmen, Council Workers v Westrac, Federal v Old Fellows, Good Sorts v Printer’s Devils.

It will be another big weekend for the club starting tonight with the wind-up of the winter putting competition. There will be a putt-off by all 16 qualifiers.

There will also be a repecharge for anyone else who wants to participate even if they have not played in this competition before.

It promises to be a fun night.

Tomorrow night the annual general meeting will be held from 6.30pm followed by the annual presentations and the Christmas party.
