Ridley proves too strong in A grade March monthly medal

A hotly contested March Monthly Medal, round one of the Keirle’s Pharmacy Summer Competition finals and the qualifying round for the Match Play championships were the order of the day last Saturday at Wellington.

Untouchables sponsored the day which attracted 62 players.

Clinton Ridley won the A grade monthly medal with a net 66. Russell Gersbach was A grade runner-up with 67.

Mitchell Spradbrow won the B grade Monthly Medal also with a net 66 while Mac Harvey’s 68 gave him runner-up status.

Other ball competition winners were Rod McMahon, Joe Ryan, Gary Cusack, Reid Armstrong and Ben McCarthy all with 69; Mitchell Cusack, Vic Payne and Stephen McCarroll 70, Colin Sheridan prior to getting married 71, John Donnelly, Ron Cowan and Gary McCarroll 71; Malcolm Payne and Kurt Cusack 72; Peter Payne, Colin Arnold and John Gersbach 73.

Joe Ryan won the Ron Stubberfield Toyota Terrific Tee Shot on hole three, John Donnelly (89cm) eight, Paul Hannelly 14 and Peter Payne 16.

Joe Ryan won the Naveau Earthmoving Nearest the Pin in two on the 10th.

Clinton Ridley’s 272 metre drive won him the McDonald’s Biggest Whack award for A grade and Simon Barton kept it straight and won it for B grade with a 180 metre drive.

No doubt distracted with the added responsibility of co-ordinating the cooking at the vintage fair from an early hour on the Sunday, Maurie Lay succumbed and went home the day’s Bradman Winner with a net 91.

Handicap changes are: Reid Armstrong 28 to 27, Russell Gersbach 12 to 11, Rod McMahon 14 to 13, Clinton Ridley 12 to 11, Mitchell Spradbrow 17 to 16, David Burke 17 to 18, John Gersbach 7 to 8, David Naveau 10 to 11, Peter Payne 11 to 12, Lewis Stanley 22 to 23, Warren Williams 26 to 27.

Tomorrow’s event is a 4BBB with CCC Golf sponsors and starters.

In the first round of the finals in the Keirle’s Pharmacy Summer Competition Federal defeated Goodsorts five up, Printer’s Devils defeated Untouchables on the 20th hole, Westrac defeated Montefiores Maulers two up and Daffy’s Ducks defeated Council Workers three up.

In the bottom eight Dirt Diggers defeated Studs two up, Puppies defeated Bogeymen three up, CCC Golf defeated Old Fellows three up and Stagg’s Tiling defeated Barmen three up.

Tomorrow’s draw in the top eight are: Daffy’s Ducks v Goodsorts, Printer’s Devils v Montefiores Maulers while Westrac and Federal have byes.

In the bottom eight Puppies play Studs and CCC Golf play Barmen with Stagg’s Tiling and Dirt Diggers having byes.

Last week’s match play was a mixed affair including the final appearance of Wellington’s divisions one and three team and others affected by rain.

Division one was against Duntryleague played at Dubbo. Joe Ryan played Robert Payne and was six down after nine holes and reportedly declared due to rain.

James Cusack lost five and four, John Donnelly lost five and four, Ben McCarthy lost three and two and Darren Whiteley lost seven and six. That’s the end of the season for division 1.

Division 2 played Blayney at Cowra. David Naveau won three and two, Mitchell Cusack won on the 20th and Kurt Cusack won two up.

Division 3 played Dubbo at Wentworth, Orange. The event was called off due to rain. After eight holes Tim Parker was in front while Robert Ridely, Rodney Cunynghame, Bill Bright and Mitchell Spradbrow were all losing. Division three is over for Wellington for the year.

Division 2 play Dubbo at Orange Ex Services on Sunday with a 9.30am tee off.

Welcome back to Alan McMahon and David Ryan who have not played for a while. A big thanks to those who volunteered to help with the cooking at the Vintage Fair on Sunday.

With Alan Ritchie attending to catering duties for a function back at the clubhouse, the multi-skilled Maurie Lay stepped back from the hot plate this year and co-ordinated activities on the cooking side of things at the vintage fair.
