Twenty-six Wellington and district young horse riders attended the Central West Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Youth Camp.
The camp was held at Cumnock recently with instructors including Glen Gough, Christine Broker, John Rumble, David Lawson, Brett Davies, Kerry Pinnell, Richard Connell, Casey McGaw, Laura Tandy and Darren Devenish.
Throughout the week, the children participated in a range of activities including campdrafting, polocrosse, show jumping, hacking, youth judging, time trials and sporting.
Camping with their parents in tents, caravans, horse floats, trucks or under the stars is always fun when you join 56 other riders from Sydney, Scone, Aberdeen, Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Forbes, Lake Cargelligo, Condobolin, Young and everywhere in between.
The chief instructor, Glen Gough from Prosperine in northern Queensland, recently returned from Canada where he instructed and demonstrated Australian Stock Horses at the Calgary Stampede.
He said he was very impressed with the quality of horses and standard of riding from the young attendants, who were aged from five to 18 years.
Even the five-year-olds were chasing cattle, playing polocrosse and jumping just like the older ones.
Local riders included Hannah, Emily and Georgia Knowles, Elly and Kirsty McCarroll, Max, Charlie, Hugh and Lucy Edwards, Oscar, Max and Lachlan Woods, Mitchell and Ollie Whiteley, Jade Miller, Georgia Lousick, Mitchell, Jackson and Gianne Squires, Brooke Lawson, Dusty and Clancy Chatworthy, Kyla Whitton, Rowena and William Nicholas and Jack Quirk.
