Ride to glory

26 Feb, 2010 09:56 AM
Two local horse riders David Whittaker and Cale Rushton will be trotting all the way to the Sydney Royal Easter Show as part of the NSW Pony Club show jumping team.

The two young boys were selected through a competition hosted by the Wellington Pony Club last year, and will travel to Sydney in April to compete at Australia’s largest annual event.

The two boys worked hard to get into the team of four, which ranges in age from 12 to 17-year-olds.

“We train our own horses,” Rushton said.

“It’s my first time to make it into the team and I’m really excited.

“I didn’t expect to get in, but I’ve always hoped for it.”

As for Whittaker, this is his second time competing at the event.

“I went up last year,” he said.

“It’s pretty awesome to get picked again.

“I think my experience from last year will help Cale this year.”

The show aims to recognise achievements in agriculture through the various competitions organised, while also promoting awareness of rural industries, issues and lifestyles.

It pays tribute to Australia’s agricultural heritage while providing a platform for the future.

Every year the show attracts about 900,000 visitors, and the thought of jumping in front of hundreds of thousands of people is a little daunting for the boys.

“You can’t let it get to you,” Whittaker said.

“You just have to concentrate hard and focus on what you are doing.”

To help the team get there, local businesses and Australian Cricket team captain Ricky Ponting have pledged their support for the riders.

“Ricky Ponting has provided us with four signed junior cricket balls,” Rushton’s mother Tracee said.

“They will be raffled to raise the funds required to outfit the team and provide training and transport of four riders and four large horses.

“Tickets (for the raffle) are available at D and J Rural Supplies, Nott’s Ag and Rural and WHK.”

The raffle will be drawn on March 1 with winners to be advised.
