If you thought cheerleading was only for national sporting teams or American teen movies then you were wrong.
Wellington now has two of its own cheerleading groups who have been working hard for the past couple of months to learn the ropes involved in the sport.
A select group of the students are set to showcase these skills at the Anglican Church fete tomorrow, with coach and co-ordinator Chrystal Bancroft reporting that the girls were looking forward to their first performance.
“The girls will be doing a pom routine which is a bit different to cheerleading and they will also be doing some stunts (lifts),” Ms Bancroft said.
“Some are nervous, some are excited, but we’re not taking it too seriously, it’s just a bit of fun.”
Junior and senior classes have been held at Market Fitness for the past few months and came about when Ms Bancroft was looking to teach a sport which was a bit different.
“Dance is really popular here and I have a background in coaching gymnastics but there is not a lot of gymnastics here so we decided to go with cheerleading,” she said.
“We’re now in our second term and it’s going really well. The first term we were just learning the steps but now we’re getting into the stunts and flyers.”
The classes are open to people of all fitness levels and experience and with Ms Bancroft being joined by volunteer coaches Danielle Reid and Brianna Phillips plenty of help is available.
“Danielle is an ex-levels gymnast and Brianna is an ex-cheerleader from Mudgee who has competed at state championships. It’s great to have them both here, Brianna helps out with routines and stunts and with Danielle we are able to use her flexibility to demonstrate a lot of moves.
“It’s a bit of fun for them and it gives the girls something to look up to.”
Following tomorrow’s fete, Ms Bancroft said the next step was to look towards competitions.
“We will be looking to compete in local competitions in the future, but at the moment we are just taking things slowly.”
Senior classes are held at Market Fitness from 4.30pm to 5.30pm on Mondays while junior classes are held on Tuesdays from 5pm to 5.45pm.
“I would encourage anyone who wants to give cheerleading a try to come along,” Ms Bancroft said.
“We especially need boys as well.”
