Geurie continued on its winning way with a strong victory against Wellington Hotel in last week’s round of Twenty20 matches.
Geurie is starting to make other sides sit up and take notice as it makes its way up the competition ladder and now pose a serious threat to the top sides.
Geurie now have their class batsman Dave Crowe back on deck and he led the way with 47 with nine fours as the village team batted first and recorded a good total of four for 166.
Geoff Higgins was among the runs again for Geurie with 40 while Ethan Douglas’ 25 and Sam Eves’ 14 not out at the end of the innings pushed the score along.
The Wellington Hotel fell for 93 in reply with the wickets shared between the bowlers.
In other matches the Western Riot had an easy victory against the Wellington Hotel seconds when Pete McQuillan routed the opposition with his donkey drops with four for 18 from four overs.
Jeff Hutchison supported with three for two as Chris Peters played a lone hand with 26 in a total of 71.
The Riot picked the runs off easily in reply with Gus Gorzalka scoring 23 on debut, while Jeff Hutchison 19 not out and Tom McInnes 18 not out passed the total comfortably with three wickets down.
In the Farmers versus South Dubbo Tavern match, which was affected by rain in the closing minutes, Dubbo batted first and scored 83.
The reliable Mal Morris scored 27 not out and Gavin Weekes scored 16 at the top of the order and the Dubbo outfit usually need Weekes to fire to get a competitive score on the board.
The South Dubbo Tavern mob sold their bus last week which is bad news for local publicans as it was a familiar sight at local bottle shops with a rowdy bunch of thirsty cricketers lining up for refreshments for the long trip home to Dubbo via the Mitchell Inn.
From reports the visiting Gulgong side cleaned out the TAB last Sunday and turned the Country Plate win against Wellington into a short holiday at sponsor pub the Wellington Hotel.
Farmers didn’t have it all their own way in the run chase as the South Dubbo Tavern had them reeling at five for 65 with Chad Taylor back under the tree with 21 to join a string of failures from their impressive top order but they limped home in the finish.
In the final match Juniors very nearly sprung an upset as they carted the Lion of Waterloo bowling attack to set a target of six for 130.
Cody Hannelly with 25 and Liam Nicholson 27 got away to a good start as they plundered the fearsome new ball attack of Moochy McCarroll and Mick Peckham.
Spencer Brien with 27 and Stacey Cornish with 20 rounded off the innings in a good batting display.
The Lion of Waterloo were reeling early with the bat when McCarroll fell to the third ball of the innings in his comeback match without troubling the scorer when Juniors’ fast bowler Scott Preston shattered his stumps.
The Lion of Waterloo were gone at seven for 65 at one stage as Preston and Fletcher Mostyn routed the top order and an upset was on the cards.
Chris Reid saved the day with 29 not out at the end as they sneaked past the Juniors’ total in a close match.
The highlight of this match was a quickfire 39 from young Lion Jordan Stanley as he blasted five sixes in his innings.
Jordan’s uncle Nathan Smith is the leader in the “Big Sixer” competition currently with six sixes and with nephew Jordan hot on his tail with five there will be plenty of rivalry in the run home to see who picks up the prize money at the end of the competition rounds.
Uncle Nathan blasted six sixes in his score of 101 a few weeks ago and they both like to score them in one outing and so there could be plenty of run out opportunities for opposition sides if they get to bat together for the Lion in remaining matches.
Will Redfern could spoil the party as he is waiting in the wings with five sixes on the leaderboard and has the talent to knock Smith and Jordan Stanley off their perches if he cuts loose again with the oversized Redfern family bat.
The leaderboard in the big sixer competition is Nathan Smith 6, Jordan Stanley 5, Will Redfern 5, Jason Gersbach 2, Brian Giddings 2, Matt Reid 2, Jeff Hutchison 2 and Ben Crean 2.
There are a host of players with only one six on the board and they include Chad Taylor, Leigh Dawson, Scott Preston and David Grant.
Should any of these batsmen fire up with a big score they will threaten the leaderboard as they all have the firepower to jump to the front and collect the spoils to be spent at the sponsors of their choice at the end of the season.
Tomorrow’s matches see Wellington Hotel seconds play the South Dubbo Tavern at Pioneer 2 at 1pm, while Juniors meet the on-song Geurie at Pioneer 2 at 4pm.
In a crucial match the Wellington Hotel Firsts meet the strong Farmers outfit at 1pm at P1 and in the match of the day on the target ground at 4pm on P1, top-of-the-table Western Riot meet the inconsistent Lion of Waterloo big hitting outfit.
This is a match that should provide some highlights, particularly if the Lion pinch hitters fire up.
