Farmers vs Western Riot

12 Mar, 2010 09:44 AM
It’s grand final day tomorrow at Pioneer Park in the local cricket competition and it is primed for an explosive finish to the season.

The Farmers and the Western Riot will clash in a third successive grand final with the trophy currently showing one premiership each for the A Division shootout.

This match will start at 4pm on Pioneer 1 and the curtain-raiser at 1pm in B Grade will be fought out between last year’s B Division combatants, the Geurie Goats and the Wellington Hotel in another no holds barred clash of the liquor establishments.

The Farmers have defeated the Western Riot in both competition matches this year, the major semi-final as well as a convincing victory to knock the Riot out of the Sevens tournament.

The four to nil bragging rights tally would have the proud Riot outfit smarting all season and they will go into tomorrow’s big game with plenty of thoughts of revenge in mind.

Net session reports are Farmers have come up with a very unusual tactic in the opening overs to compensate for the loss of their spearhead Angus Maurice and it will throw an interesting twist into the opening overs of the Western Riot innings.

One would be excused for thinking Farmers have been snooping in the Bryan Johnson grand final book of tactics this week as it appears to be one straight out of the coach’s text book.

This match has all the hallmarks of an epic grand final and I will stick to my prediction from last Saturday that it will go down to the last over.

Angus Maurice is out, but Will Martel is back for Farmers, however the loss of Maurice will definitely even the two sides up.

In saying that, the Riot’s reliable opening bowler Des Copus is also in doubt with a nasty hamstring strain which occurred in the major semi-final.

The match is likely to come down to the performances of the top couple of batsmen on each side and if one were to tally the scores of the top order from each side at the end of the day this should prove to be a telling factor as the big guns with the willow should hold the key to this grand final.

Jeff Hutchinson, Ben Crean, Brian Dutfield, Leigh Dawson and Jason Ryan from the Riot will need to outscore Will Martel, Grant Roberts, Chad Taylor, Dugald Campbell and Brian Giddings to get the upper hand as these batsmen are likely to see most of the strike in the big one.

Both teams field and catch well and there should be plenty of highlights tomorrow.

I will stick my neck out and go with the Western Riot to turn the tables on the sheer degree of probability that it is their turn to win and they looked good last week in a tradesman-like performance and should salute tomorrow in a close one.

The only advantage that could go in the Farmers’ favour tomorrow is that from all reports they will have such a massive supporter base on the sideline that even some bank managers and stock and station agents are likely to turn up to socialise.

This could be a telling factor as although Farmers are not at full strength tomorrow they usually play the game with plenty of heart, support and good humour.

Geurie looks to be the good thing in the B Division grand final and from reports they will be wheeling out their aggressive pinch hitter imported from Narrabri to take the game by the scruff of the neck early in their innings.

Geurie’s preliminary final win against the Lion of Waterloo more resembled a local derby football clash than Twenty20 cricket but the Goats will be a bit more subdued tomorrow when they are handed a “Code of Conduct” letter prior to kick-off.

If the Geurie pub and other village establishments are still intact after the “Battle of the Ashes” is fought out in the lonely halls of the judiciary during the week and Geurie have all of their top players escape suspension from the last-round war with the now tranquillised Lions outfit, the Goats should win this grand final in a canter to make it two in a row.

The Wellington Hotel mob are lucky to turn up to play let alone put in a performance good enough to get their name on “The Ashes” and Geurie are more of a certainty to win the reserve grade title than Chance Bye is of winning this year’s Golden Slipper.

There is no truth in the rumour the Lions have been assigned umpiring duties for this clash.

Dubbo bowed out last week after a successful debut season. They were a welcome addition to the competition and may be more formidable next season when they get the chequebook out to sign a few ageing Dubbo “Master Blasters”.

The only plus the Emus will take out of the season will be the lucrative offer to Dubbo veteran Mal Morris as captain/coach of the newly-formed Wellington/Goats Golden Oldies Masters team instigated by “Aggro from Narrabri” after he is chaired off the park tomorrow and Graham “Aggro” Coleman produces his long-awaited retirement speech after a Geurie win that will kick off proceedings for a long night of celebrations west of Wellington.

Last week Western Riot seven for 153 with Ben Crean 39 not out defeated Dubbo eight for 110 with Brian Furner 25.

The Wellington Hotel made eight for 110 with Chris Peters 19 and a great bowling effort from Juniors’ Spencer Brien with four for 10 with his off-breaks threw a spanner into the works in an unconvincing display from the Wellington Hotel on the eve of a grand final.

Wellington Hotel will be pinning their hopes on a good all-round display from the talented Chris Peters if they are to upset the Geurie juggernaut tomorrow.

Juniors replied with 70 with only Troy Collins 20 showing any resistance along with Casey Preston that rounded off an enjoyable year for the Juniors side. They didn’t win a game all season but they are a great bunch of players ably led by their young captain Cody Hannelly.

Players from both sides in the A Division grand final are urged to turn up about 3pm so they can take to the paddock straight after the end of the reserve grade grand final to avoid finishing the last few crucial overs in the dark and also so we can get to the pub earlier to celebrate.

The grand finals are on tomorrow from 1pm with full canteen facilities available and the cricket association’s new government grant funded shades will be in operation with the new Kevin Rudd testimonial plastic chair grandstand open tomorrow for the first time on the hill at the home of cricket.
