Thai sensation shares secrets

18 Feb, 2011 09:39 AM
Thai boxing sensation Kampan Santaweesook is in Wellington as he prepares for world title fights to be fought on Australian soil.

Santaweesook is currently training with local gym owner Phil Bennett, who he has trained with in Thailand and Australia for about 10 years.

“Kampan is one of the best Muay Thai fighters you will ever see and thanks to the owner of the MTP 2004 gym where Kampan trains he has come to Australia,” Bennett said.

“Last time he was here he was relatively unknown and fought Queensland fighter and Australian number one Flip Street, and absolutely thrashed him.

“Kampan will be conducting seminars while he is in Australia, some with other champion fighters. They will be doing two seminars in Wellington, one in Newcastle, some in Queensland, all over the place.”

At only 23 years of age, Santaweesook is good enough to be sending world title holders running for the hills.

“I asked champion Ben Burridge if he would like to fight Kampan to defend his title and he straight away said no,” Bennett said.

“Ben will be coming down to do a seminar here in Wellington with Kampan but he wouldn’t fight him. He said that Kampan was way too good.

“Kampan has something like eight world titles and out of 71 fights he’s won 66 and has had 61 first-round knock outs. At the moment we’re trying to bring his weight down because he thought he would be fighting at the 67 kilogram weight but now it will be his usual 61 kilograms, so we’re trying to get him back down to that.”

Bennett remembers even when they were younger how Kampan was “scarily good” at what he does.

“I’ve been training with him for about 10 years now and even back at the start he was some kind of freak of nature,” he said.

“He takes a lot of risks when he fights. Muay Thai involves not only the hands like Western-style boxing or hands and feet like martial arts but also elbows and knees.

“He does things when he fights that no other fighter would even consider - things that would hurt him as well as his opponent.

“I think that this risk-taking and his natural ability as a fighter is what makes him so good.

“I’ve trained and trained with heaps of people his age who have trained for as long as he has and they are rubbish. He’s just a natural.”

Santaweesook’s title fights will be broadcast on Fox Sports. The seminar will be held tomorrow at the Angel Muay Thai Gym from 8am to 11am. Cost is $50.
